What makes vascular (doppler) ultrasound different?

Doppler ultrasound is a noninvasive test that can be used to estimate the blood flow through your blood vessels by bouncing high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) off circulating red blood cells. A regular ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images, but can't show blood flow.

These scans enable doctors to assess the blood flow through major arteries and veins, such as those of the arms, legs, neck and abdomen. It can show blocked or reduced flow of blood through narrow areas in the major arteries and is used to assist in diagnosis of vascular conditions.

We can help you with a wide range of highly-specialised vascular scans, including:

  • Arterial duplex scan

  • DVT scan

  • Carotid scan

  • AVF scan

  • Venous competency

  • Aorta/iliac scan

  • Endoluminal graft scan

  • Mesenteric artery scan

  • Pelvic vein scan

  • Renal artery scan

  • Renal transplant scan

How are these scans done?

An ultrasound probe is placed on your leg, arm, neck or abdomen (depending which area is to be scanned) and high-frequency sound waves are used to create images of the arteries. Doppler technology is used to analyze the speed and direction of blood flow. The images are displayed on a monitor and are digitally recorded.

Are these scans painful?

Not at all. A Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless procedure that doesn't expose you to harmful radiation. There are no risks associated with this test, and most people feel little to no discomfort during the procedure.

Do I need to fast prior to my vascular scan?

You will be required to fast prior to all abdominal scans. Instructions will be given to you when booking your appointment.

All other scans have no fasting requirements.
